Eighteen Arhats

Introduction

Buddhism suggested that the Eighteen Arhats were composed of  sixteen arhats and two patriarchs; and all of them had been known as historical figures and disciples of Gautama Buddha. The first sixteen arhats became popular in  Tong Dynasty and at the end of Tong two more arhats were added and the Eighteen Arhats altogether  were  prevalent in Song Dynasty. The number of eighteen is believed as a reflection of the Chinese traditional  preference – eighteen may represent luck or fortune.
