Immortal Magistrates

Introduction

With a vicious face, some Immortal Magistrates are really insidious but most of them are good-natured, sincere and virtuous . And one’s destiny in the underworld  is subject to  his life during lifetime. Immortal Magistrates would punish the ones  who committed all kinds of evils and pardon the ones with good deeds. With a duty of sentencing the spirits after one‘s death, they are the judges in the necropolis called Fengdu. There are four famous Magistrates including Ministry of Award, Ministry of Punishment, Ministry of Investigation and the Judge Cui Jue.

Ministry of Award: With a smiling face and a green gown, the Ministry of Award is responsible  for praising spirits who had done good deeds when alive, and according to one’s work to impose different rewards, from letting go to Heaven (to be a God) or to be reborn (to be human in the next lifetime). It is commonly believed that after the spirit has taken the Five Flavored Tea of Forgetfulness from Meng Po (Lady of Forgetfulness), s/he would forget all of the past and reincarnate in the desire realm.

Ministry of Punishment: With an angry staring eyes, closing lips, a purple gown and  impartial appearance, the Ministry of Punishment judges  evil spirits according to eight "failures" principle: unfaithful, unfilial, unscrupulous, disloyal, impolite, merciless, disgraceful and disrespectful . It is believed that all spirits would first stand in front of the mirror before trial; that mirror can reflect one’s life and distinguish one‘s deeds. The Ministry would also sentence those spirits according to their works, but all the evil spirits would be sent to hell and suffer different excruciations within the eighteen levels (the eighteenth  level is believed to be the most torturing). And one could be reborn  as a  cattle in the desire realm upon the completion of sentence.

Ministry of Investigation: With his penetrating eyes and an outspoken and  righteous personality, the Ministry of Investigation is responsible for  promoting kindness  and punishing villains for what they have committed, as well as rehabilitating those innocent.

With a life and death album in his left hand and soul-captivation pen in the right, Judge Cuipan is the core figure in the Hell. Cui is responsible for prolonging good men‘s life or sending those bad to  hell. According to the Journal to the West, Cui originally was a subordinate of the Emperor Taizong of Tang; and due to his honesty and probity, he became the most reliable judge of the King of the Hell. With his soul-captivation pen running on the life and death album, Cui could decide one’s destiny within one second. And he had gained good reputation through his story of helping Tang from difficultly, thus people shrined him in different locations.
