The Earth God of Wealth and Merit was originally named Zhang Fude (Fude can be literally translated into wealth and merit). Zhang was best known for his intelligence and filial piety. He served as an imperial official of tax at the age of 36. During his official career, he insisted in being incorruptible, honest and compassionate so people adored and respected him a lot. Zhang died at the age of 102 but his appearance remained the same for three days after his death. His corpse was placed in a stone room built by a poor family. Soon the family became rich and it was believed they were blessed by Zhang. Later the villagers joined to mold the corpse with gold and shrined him in a temple for worshipping. Some people also said that the successive official‘s bribery and corruption reminded people of the honesty and benevolence of Zhang so people built temple and worshipped him as the God of Wealth and Merit.
