The Sixth and Last Patriarch o

Introduction

Huineng is the sixth and last Patriarch of Chan Buddhism. He is the only son of the Imperial Supervisor of the Emperor Taizong called Lu Xingtao. He was born in a poor family in XinXing, Guangdong and his father died at his age of 3. It is believed that his name Huineng was  given by a monk who had received the  mercy of Lu’s father. Huineng in Chinese, according to the monk, means kindness and capability: be kind to people and be capable to achieve Buddhahood.  By occasionally hearing  Diamond Sutra, an idea of becoming a monk occurred to him. Then he followed the fifth Patriarch and became the sixth Patriarch in Taoism.
